In an industrial steam boiler, water is heated to a set temperature and created steam by boiling.
How Does a Steam Boiler Work?
In general, the concept of a steam boiler in any industry is that of a closed vessel, inside which potential amount of water is stored. There is an adjacent furnace where fuel or other resources are burnt. The burning, in turn, produces a substantial amount of hot gases, which is channeled through the furnace tubes and comes in contact with the water vessel. The closed chamber, filled with water gets heated up in contact with the hot gases, initiating the process of evaporation. Consequent, steam is obtained from the water stored in the vessel. In the case of Thermal power plants, this generated steam is channeled through tubes to the Thermal Power generating turbines.
Types of Industrial Steam Boilers
There are typically two types of steam boilers which are mainly used for industrial purpose. These are fire tube boiler and water tube boiler. In a fire tube boiler, the hot gas passes through numerous tubes and each tube is surrounded by water. Whereas in water tube boilers, the water passes through the tubes and it is the hot gas which surrounds the water tubes.
#1. Fire Tube Boilers or Shell Boilers
As per industrial usage is concerned, fire tube boilers are the most common types of boiler used in small or medium sized industries. The most advantageous part associated with this type of boiler is that it comes in a package of required functioning units, like the control system or the pump. All you need is a connection to get started with industrial operations.
In this type of boiler, the vessels carrying the flame and hot gases to the water chamber are all combined within a water drum. These tubes are bundled together and form a pattern and the water surrounds these bundles of tubes. As the hot gas within the vessels, raises the water temperature initiating the evaporation, the steam is formed. Once the steam is formed it surfaces on the upper side of the drum. However, you cannot obtain an extremely high pressure of steam from these boilers, they are able to offer steam requirements of up to 15 to 30 bars, with an optimum steaming rate of 70/000kg/hr.

#2. Water Tube Boilers
The procedure of steam formation and the technique applied in water tube boilers is just the opposite of fire tube boilers. In water tube boilers, unlike the fire tube boilers, it is the water that passes through the bundled vessels and the hot gasses are outside the tubes instead.
When it comes to an industrial steam boiler, water tube boilers come with a definite set of advantages.

These types of boilers are mostly preferred in large scale industrial purposes.
